MAURER, James Hudson, a Representative from Berks County; born in Reading, Berks County, Pa., April 15, 1864; newsboy; factory worker; machinist’s apprentice; editor, Reading Union Sentinel (1905); unsuccessful Socialist Party candidate, Governor of Pennsylvania (1906, 1930); elected as a Socialist to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1910, 1914 and 1916; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1912, 1918); member, National Committee of the Socialist Party; member, State Executive Committee; president, Pennsylvania State Federation of Labor (1912-1928); elected, council, Reading (1927-1930); unsuccessful campaign, United States Vice President (1928, 1932); unsuccessful campaign, United States Senate (1934); founding board member, American Civil Liberties Union, the Worker’s Education Bureau of America and American Birth Control League (Planned Parenthood); died, March 16, 1944 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
