Hess Cigar Company; president, Lancaster Malleable Casting Company; president, Purdy-Hess Company; registry assessor and member, Pequea Township County Committee; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1911 term; reelected to the House to serve the 1913, 1915, 1917, 1919, 1921, 1925, 1927 and 1929 terms; elected, Majority Leader (1921-1922, 1927-1928); elected, Speaker (1929-1930); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1922, 1930); died, August 4, 1933 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; interred, Greenwood Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
