HEWITT, Earl Edward, Sr., a Representative from Indiana County; born, Penfield, Clearfield County, Pa., on July 22, 1872; graduated, DuBois High School, 1898; E.M., The Pennsylvania State (University) College, 1903; mining engineer; engaged, security business; postmaster, United States Post Office, Dilltown, Pa. (10 years); coal operator (20 years); elected, delegate, Republican National Convention (1928); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1932; reelected to the House in 1938 and served 9 consecutive terms thereafter; appointed, Commission to Make Certain Studies of Bituminous Coal Mines (1939-1940); appointed, Anthracite Subsidence Commission (1943-1944); appointed, Joint Legislative Committee on Strip Mining (1945-1946); appointed, Joint Legislative Historical Committee (1947-1948); appointed, Joint State Government Commission (1947-1948); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1934, 1956); died, August 9, 1972 in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania; interred, Erie Cemetery, Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania.
