HANKINS, Freeman, a Representative from Philadelphia County; born in Brunswick, Glynn County, Ga., September 30, 1918; graduated, Friendship School, Pittsburgh; attended, Selden Institute; graduated, Dolan’s College of Embalming, 1945; attended, Temple University, 1947-1950; served, Medical Corps, United States Army (1945-1946, World War II); funeral director; chair, 6th Ward Democratic Executive Committee; 2nd Vice Chair, Philadelphia Democratic Committee (1971-1976); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1961 term and reelected for 3 more consecutive terms; resigned from the House, November 29, 1967; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (Special Election, 1967-1988); appointed, board, Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) (1981-1988); not a candidate for reelection, Pennsylvania State Senate (1988); died, December 31, 1988 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Fernwood Cemetery and Mausoleum, Fernwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
