RITNER, Joseph, a Representative from Washington County; born, March 25, 1780 in Alsace Township, Berks County, Pa.; private, 1st Regiment, Captain Benjamin Anderson’s Company, Pennsylvania Militia (1812, War of 1812); farmer; weaver; elected, road supervisor (1819-1820); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1821-1822 term; reelected to the House for 5 more consecutive terms; elected, Speaker (1825-1827); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania Governor (1829, 1832); elected, Pennsylvania Governor (1835-1839); appointed, director, United States Mint (1848); elected, delegate, Republican National Convention (1856); died, October 15, 1869 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mount Rock Methodist Churchyard, Mount Rock, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
