EWING, John Hoge, a Representative from Washington County; born, October 5, 1796, Luzerne, Fayette County, Pa.; graduated, Washington College (now Washington & Jefferson College), 1814; captain, Company F, 6th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia (1862, Civil War); studied law under Thomas McGiffin; lawyer (1818); contractor, National Road construction; superintendent of construction, Washington-Pittsburgh Turnpike; director, Chartiers Valley Railroad Company (1831-1869); trustee, Washington College (1834-1887); elected as an Anti-Mason to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1835-1836 term, not a candidate for reelection to the House; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1838-1842); elected, Speaker of the Senate (1841-1842); engaged, real estate; engaged, coal mining; sheep farmer; director, Franklin Bank of Washington; elected, president, State Temperance Convention (1841); elected, United States Congress (1844-1846); trustee, Washington Female Seminary (1846-1887); Presidential elector (1860); president, Washington-Waynesburg Railroad; died, June 9, 1887 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania; interred, Washington Cemetery, Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
