SUTHERLAND, Dr. Joel Barlow, a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, February 26, 1792 in Clonmel, Gloucester County, NJ; M.D. University of Pennsylvania, 1812; lieutenant colonel commandant, assistant surgeon, Pennsylvania Militia (1812-1814, War of 1812); physician, Lazaretto; elected as a Republican to the 1813-1814 term; reelected to the House as a Democratic-Republican for the 1814-1815 and 1815-1816 terms; lawyer (1819-1861); reelected to the House as a Democrat for the 1821-1822, 1822-1823, 1823-1824 and 1824-1825 terms; elected, Speaker (1824-1825); elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1825-1827); trustee, Jefferson Medical College (1826-1861); elected, United States Congress (1827-1837); associate judge, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas (1833-1834); died, November 15, 1861 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
