ATKINSON, Thomas M., a Representative from Crawford and Venango Counties; born, July 11, 1781 in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa.; captain, 137th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia (1812-1814, War of 1812); publisher, Weekly Messenger (1805-1833); elected, commissioner, Crawford County (1810-1813); trustee, Allegheny College (1815); elected, treasurer, Crawford County (1820-1822); elected, burgess, Meadville (1823-1824); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1824, 1827, 1831); unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1826, 1830); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1826-1827 term; reelected to the House as a Whig for the 1835-1836 term; died, March 11, 1837 in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; interred, Greendale Cemetery, Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
