BINNEY, Horace, a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, January 4, 1780 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; B.A., Harvard University, 1797; honorary Doctor of Laws, Harvard University, 1827; lawyer (1800-1850); elected as a Federalist to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1806-1807 term; director, First United States Bank (1808, 1831); unsuccessful campaign, common council, Philadelphia (1808); elected, common council, Philadelphia (1810-1812); unsuccessful campaign, United States Senate (1814); elected, select council, Philadelphia (1816-1819); unsuccessful campaign, director, Second Bank of the United States (1816); president, Law Academy, Philadelphia (1832); director, Pennsylvania Company for Insurances on Lives and Granting Annuities (1833); elected, United States Congress (1833-1835); died, August 12, 1875 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Church of Saint James the Less (Episcopal) Churchyard, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
