BALL, Joseph, a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, 1755 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; manager and owner, Batsto Iron Works, NJ (1775-1781); engaged, real estate and shipping (1782-1810); director, Bank of the United States (1791); board member, Insurance Company of America (1792-1799); trustee, University of Pennsylvania (1794-1821); alderman, Philadelphia (1796); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Federalist for the 1796-1797 and 1797-1798 terms; director, Bank of Pennsylvania (1797); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania Senate (1799): president, Union Insurance Company (1803); elected, president, Pennsylvania Company for the Insurance of Lives and Granting Annuities (1809); died April 24, 1821 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred at Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
