STEWART, Andrew J., Sr., a Representative from Fayette County; born, June 11, 1791 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pa.; graduated, Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College), 1809; teacher; attorney (1815-1872); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1815-1816, 1816-1817 and 1817-1818 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1818-1819 term; appointed, United States Attorney for Western District of Pennsylvania (1818-1820); elected, United States Congress (1821-1829; 1831-1835; 1843-1849); unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1834, 1870); proprietor, Wharton Furnace (1839-1872); elected, delegate, National Republican Convention (1860); elected, auditor, Fayette County (1863-1865); owner, glass works; owner, saw and flour mills; engaged, real estate and home construction; died, July 16, 1872 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; interred, Oak Grove Cemetery, South Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
