BURROWES, Thomas Henry, a Representative from Lancaster County; born, November 16, 1805 in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pa.; attended, Trinity College, Ireland; studied law under Amos Ellmaker; attended, Yale Law School; lawyer (1829-1871); elected as an Anti-Mason to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1831-1832 and 1832-1833 terms; appointed, Secretary of the Commonwealth (1835-1838); farmer (1838-1845); publisher, Pennsylvania School Journal; elected, mayor, Lancaster (1858); appointed, State Superintendent of Common Schools (1860-1862); appointed, superintendent, State Solders’ Orphan Schools (1865); president, State Agricultural College (now The Pennsylvania State University) (1868-1871); died, February 25, 1871 in State College, Centre County, Pennsylvania; interred, Saint James Episcopal Church Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
