BARBER, John, a Representative from Lancaster County; born, February 23, 1782 in Lancaster County, Pa.; served, 75th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia (1812, War of 1812); engaged, dry goods and lumber businesses (1804-1849); secretary, Susquehanna and York Borough Turnpike (1809); director, Columbia and Portsmouth Turnpike; state director, Columbia Bridge Company; elected, auditor, Lancaster County (1818); elected, burgess, Columbia, Pa. (1824, 1829); elected as a Federalist to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1826-1827 term; appointed, superintendent, Columbia and Philadelphia Rail Road (1829-1833); treasurer, Columbia, Marietta and Portsmouth Road (1833); died, October 23, 1868 in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mount Bethel Cemetery, Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
